Cutting out fallen trees

You can join a work party to cut out trees that have fallen across trails. The camaraderie is great, and--in cold weather--the work keeps you warm (though you need to wear clothes and carry gear appropriate for the weather, sometimes at high altitude).

Whenever the trails are free of snow, the typical weekly work party goes out. Check with a contact person, listed below, to learn what's going on now or to get on a list to be notified when the regular effort begins again (after snow melts from the trails at low elevation).

Preventing erosion

Among our goals is this: to field another team that will forestall erosion by improving the water diversion dips and ditches along trails. The team may expand its efforts to include (1) improving the trail surface (by removing rocks and by filling in holes) and (2) maintaining the corridor width by pruning shrubs and branches that grow into the standard corridor.
